Role Overview

RaytonCorp (PTY) Ltd is seeking a Senior Data Engineer with a strong foundation in Data Analytics to design, build, and manage robust data platforms that deliver meaningful business insights. This role is ideal for a hands-on data professional who understands not only how to move and structure data, but also why the data exists and how it is used to drive decisions. You will oversee a small analytics team (2 Data Analysts) while remaining deeply involved in data engineering, modelling, and optimisation.

Key Responsibilities

Data Engineering & Platform Ownership

• Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and ETL/ELT processes
• Ensure data reliability, performance, and accuracy across all data systems
• Optimise data storage, transformation, and querying for analytics and reporting
• Integrate data from multiple internal and external sources

Analytics Enablement

• Translate business requirements into well-structured datasets and models
• Ensure data structures support meaningful insights, KPIs, and reporting
• Collaborate with stakeholders to understand analytical needs and outcomes
• Enable self-service analytics and BI where appropriate

Team Leadership & Oversight

• Lead and mentor a team of 2 Data Analysts
• Review analytical outputs to ensure accuracy, clarity, and business relevance
• Set standards for data quality, documentation, and best practices
• Assist analysts in complex data investigations and modelling challenges

Governance, Security & Best Practices

• Implement data quality checks, monitoring, and validation processes
• Ensure compliance with data governance, security, and privacy standards
• Document data pipelines, models, and architectural decisions
• Contribute to long-term data architecture and strategy planning

Required Experience & Skills

Experience

• Approximately 8 years’ experience working with data, including:
  • Significant hands-on experience as a Data Engineer
  • Prior experience as a Data Analyst or analytics-focused role
• Proven experience supporting business intelligence and reporting platforms
• Experience leading or mentoring junior team members

Technical Skills

• Advanced SQL (query optimisation, complex joins, performance tuning)
• Strong experience with data pipelines and ETL/ELT tools
• Proficiency in Python (or similar) for data processing and automation
• Experience with cloud data platforms (Azure, AWS, or equivalent)
• Data modelling (star schemas, fact/dimension tables)
• Familiarity with BI tools such as Power BI or Tableau

Analytical & Business Skills

• Strong understanding of KPIs, metrics, and business reporting
• Ability to translate business questions into technical data solutions
• High attention to detail and data accuracy
• Excellent problem-solving and communication skills

Advantageous (Nice to Have)

• Experience in managed services, consulting, or multi-client environments
• Exposure to data governance or compliance frameworks
• Experience working with large or high-velocity datasets
• Microsoft data stack experience (Azure Data Factory, Synapse, Fabric, SQL Server)
